Hundreds of shoppers are now proud owners of St Austell’s first loyalty card, which was launched with a fanfare in the town centre during the summer of 2009.  The St Austell Shopper gives customers discounts and exclusive offers, while businesses reap the rewards of people staying loyal and local and its free to the retailer to participate. The St Austell Guardian and town centre manager Tasha Davis worked together to make the idea a reality. A wide range of businesses have already signed up

Zoe Bourdeaux, community editor of The St Austell Guardian, said: "We decided to give the first 100 cards away free, and we had a queue of people ready to take them. In no time we were selling dozens of cards and everyone was really positive. We want to do our bit to keep St Austell a vibrant and exciting place and we really hope the St Austell Shopper brings a buzz back into town".

The cards, which cost £3 each, aim to boost local trade and keep people dedicated to shopping in the town. Similar schemes are already a success in Falmouth, St Ives, Penzance, Newquay and Camborne, where thousands of shoppers have signed up for cards.

Tasha Davis, Town Centre Manager said:  "I was really pleased at the amount of interest the card generated. It just proves the loyalty that St Austell’s customers have for the town. I would encourage any business in the town to sign up and help to create a really powerful and enticing campaign to support their town"

We want more businesses to sign up  and it’s not restricted to the town centre .  Participating businesses are displaying a sticker with the town’s loyalty card logo in their window, to show customers they are members of the scheme. The £3 cost of the loyalty card will go back into St Austell, for example towards Christmas lights.

Its that simple but we need more support.  There are currently 27 retailers signed up to the scheme as you can see opposite but we need more. In the new year a marketing/advertising leaflet is to be produced in conjunction with the St Austell Guardian and Cornwall Council whereby all participating retailers will get free advertising so what have you to lose!
