Civic Pride News
This £3.7 million project is funded by the St Austell Civic Pride Partnership, which consists of Objective One, the South West of England Regional Development Agency, Restormel Borough Council and Cornwall County Council.
Trinity Street has now been completed with a modern design with contemporary seating, planting and lighting, providing a Gateway into the town centre.
Trevarthian Road has been completed, creating an improved route into the town centre with granite paving. Another area completed is Cross Lane which joins Market Street and High Cross Street along with Market and Church Street, creating a more visible pedestriansed area with extra disabled parking spaces.
Biddick’s Court, as the main thoroughfare between the main town centre car park and the shops, is receving a substantial facelift generating a pleasant public space, complemented with trees, seating and feature lighting. It is hoped that this will facilitate consideration for street cafés and markets. Access for deliveries and to private off-highway parking will remain.
High Cross Street has received wider, granite paved footways with raised, table-top crossing points and provision of short term parking opposite the Post Office. A new footwayhas been created on the eastern side adjacent to Cemetery Park, allowing enhancement of the park entry points.
In Cemetery Park, replacement of at least some of the boundary wall with railings has been done. The use of decorative gating, careful thinning and tidying of the existing trees results in a more open and therefore safer aspect to the area. The park is also going to benefit from a new network of paths, seating and lighting to complete its makeover.
All works are progressing well and on schedule to be finished by 31st July 2008. The wrought ironwork is being designed and produced locally at Charlestown Forge. These pieces of work will include a Sundial for Cemetery Park and wrought iron railings, tree guards and pillars for Biddicks Court.
The proposals are again in line with the recommendations of the St Austell Civic Pride Initiative and incorporate extensive use of high quality local granite.
Details and all drawings are available on display in the Engine House, which is open from 10am – 1pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and from 1pm to 4pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
